Principal
Climate Mitigation Services
Rick's recent work has focused on supply-chain GHG emissions (LNG from Australia to southern California), municipal inventories (for the City and community of Aspen, Colorado, Town of Frisco, and Jackson Hole), and large-scale energy-sector investment portfolios (Export-Import Bank of the United States). Also aviation and air travel, corporate jet fleets, and large air courier services. Previous work includes corporate emissions (ExxonMobil 1882-2002) and facilities (Oberlin College, Milton Hershey School). Other interests and expertise extends to super-efficient residential building design and retrofit, hydrogen production technology (especially nuclear H2 schemes), renewable energy, and indicators for the assessment of nations' energy sustainability.

Rick has pursued climate concerns since the mid-1970s, with an MA thesis with NCAR in 1983 (the geography of recoverable carbon), and throughout his 18-year career with Rocky Mountain Institute. He founded Climate Mitigation Services in 2002. His dual focus is on comprehensive emissions inventories (scopes 1-3) and on identifying and prioritizing emissions reduction opportunities.

Rick follows the climate science, with a special interest in the cryosphere, SLR, and Antarctica. He burns ~3.3 tonnes of carbon per annum, including commercial and personal flying. His household consumes 10.7 kWh/m2-yr, and emits 4.8 kgC/m2-yr (heat + electricity).
